Memories

|
|

She was a sweet, kind and gentle mare. She had an adorable
face and was a beauty in her prime. We started the long road to recovery. Teeth floated, hooves trimmed, a special diet and Misty, now named Misty
Rose, seemed to bloom and began to put on weight. We were thrilled. In the
meantime, her former owner, was telling everyone how she was going to get
Misty Rose back, once she was recovered. Sweet Misty Rose began to decline
and the vet was called out to find out why. The news hit hard. Her
starvation by her "so called family" had destroyed her liver and kidneys
and she way dying. There was nothing we could do. We watched her get
thinner and thinner. We
tried to keep children around her, as she loved them so. She was just a
big babysitter, kind and gentle with the little ones.
She spent the last few months with a small girl, and when
it became apparent she was failing, we brought her home. I awoke two weeks
later to see her bright red blanket on the ground. She had slipped away,
during the night. Her head looking toward the house, as if saying her
goodbyes and thanking us for the last few months of her life. She had
fought hard for 8 months, but the starvation, that was so cruel and
inhumane, had claimed her.
Misty Rose didn't have to die. She could have had many
good years left, if only she would have been cared for. If they didn't
want her, there were so many places that would have taken her. That sweet,
kind soul was killed in the most insidious way.
As I laid my head upon her cold body, it came to mind, did
she ever wonder what she had done, that her humans would not feed her? The
hunger pains tearing across her empty stomach as she smelled the hay the
other horse was fed. A once loved member of the family, dying in front of
a picture window, while the hay tractor went by her every day. Why had
they stopped loving her? Why did they watch this sweet girl die inch by
inch just across the driveway? If you know the answer, please tell me.
I mourn that sweet girl and all the others like her. I
hope Misty Rose is waiting at Heavens gate, when her former owners arrive.
I would hope she would turn them away, but I know better. She has a bigger
heart than they ever had or will have.

Bless You Misty Rose,
you taught me so much in
your short time with us. |

Barbaro was a
Thoroughbred, a race horse. I am no proponent of racing. I have
thoroughbreds here at Break Heart that are recovering from race
injuries. These horses were fortunate to have found safe haven here.
Most of those with injuries, or do not win enough races will end up on
the slaughter lines.
This tribute is for
Barbara, he did something no government can do, he united the American
people. Americans root for the underdog, and to pull for this
magnificent horse, in his battle for survival was just that! Young,
old, rich, poor, peoples from all backgrounds came to wish Barbaro the
best. We put aside, all our differences to fall in love with a brave
animal with a greater heart. An American in every sense of the word. An
Icon of the American people united.

a " BIG THANK YOU"
to FOB from
Fobe!!

An Arabian Lost ....
Just
over 5 years ago, a beautiful bay stud colt was born. He should have had a
long, happy life. Instead he suffered severe abuse at the hands of man. So
severe, his once beautiful coat was covered in scars. Much worse were the
scars that didn't show. The Scars of the mind. This 5 year old bay Arabian
Stallion was so terrified of humans he was a danger to himself and
all
those around him. Fear, out of control, caused him to attack his farrier
and his handler.
I was called for advice as to what should be done with this poor abused
horse. After hearing about the attack and how terrified he was around
humans, I told her the most humane thing to do for him was to put him
down. Sometimes we must make hard choices, we must admit that there is no
saving an animal, no matter how much we want to. To cause this animal more
trauma and possibly severe injury or death to the humans who cared for him
was not an option. It broke my heart not to take him, but when the mind is
gone, no love on earth can bring it back. I cared enough to tell the truth
for his best interest. The person who cared for him agreed. I knew enough
to let him go. I have his blessing and that is all that matters to me.

Whisper
Whisper - My dear sweet “Old Lady”. Seventeen years of
loving you. We were there at your passing, your dear head on
my heart, as you had done for so many years. Holding you for that
last farewell. Your space is empty on my pillow as it is in
our hearts. Thank you, dear Whisper, for blessing us and
loving us. I miss your soft touch on my face.

Buddy
This beautiful 19 year old red roan was looking
for a home. He was rescued by a friend of mine and I was lucky
enough to find him a wonderful forever home in Kearney. Buddy has
many long years ahead of him and he is growing fat and sassy.

Buddy was greatly loved, in his new home, but age and starvation
would not be denied. If his former owner had not treated him like
trash, he might have lived a longer life. As it was, the time
he had with his new family was doubly precious.

Double Eagle
Double Eagle - unforgettable, and in our hearts always. To
watch you run and play one day, only to find you lifeless the next
broke our hearts. We will never know what claimed you, only you
claimed our hearts forever.

Snickers and Oats
andoats(sor)002.jpg) andoats(sor)005.jpg)
Snickers and Oats - Two old duffers together for over
twenty years. You both had a loving and wonderful
life, and you were well loved by your foster Moms.
Oats passed peacefully in his sleep, and Snickers, always
the mother hen, followed him a month later. Their love and
devotion to each other transcended this lifetime.

Little Katalina ....
Katalina
was a starving filly from Minden, Ne. She was weaned at about 3
months old (far too early) and unable to survive with the bigger
horses she was put with. No special attempt was made to help her
and all offers of
help
were refused. When she came to Break Heart Ranch she was unable to eat
and was very close to dying. She was force hand fed for two day
before she began to start to eat on her own. This poor little
filly was treated as disposable garbage. Charges have been filed
against the man who refused to care for her and the City Police are
more than reluctant to bring charges against him. I can handle death
threats against me, slander and rude and unethical conduct from the
Police Department. However, what was done to this poor filly is
a crime. I will continue to pursue justice and speak up for this
little girl.
12/13/05 - Here is a new photo
(below) of this little starved filly. She was weighed on 12/13/05 and
has gained over one hundred pounds. She still has a way to go, but is
beginning to act like a filly. she loves playing with the other
babies and gets upset if separated. She has lost most of her fear of
being touched and responds with little nickers when you talk to her.
She comes to the fence now to visit and get her rubs and treats.
Katalina is not up for adoption due to her still tenuous health.
Janet Wheelock and her horse
Cricket
are Katalina's new Sponsor family --
we so greatly appreciate this wonderful person
who has stepped forward to help bring this little girl back to health.
Update 06/12/06 - Sadly little Katalina passed away
after an 8 month long fight to survive. Her liver and kidneys were
damaged beyond repair by her starvation and neglect. She gave a good
fight and at least learned that not all humans are bad.

Beautiful Buck....
Words
can not express how I felt when I saw the horrible gaping, oozing
wound in this poor colts leg. It was evident it had been there a long
time, filled with handfuls of proud flesh, dripping blood and ichor.
He couldn't bend his leg due to the large amount of proud flesh and
swelling. I worked into the pen, unsure as to his reception of the
intrusion and was rewarded as
he let me run my hand down his swollen leg looking for bone
splinters. It was obvious this little stud colt had a loving
disposition. No one was going to stop me bringing him home. He was so
scared when we were loading up that he sat right down on the ground.
He was shaking. After soothing words and assurances that he was not
going to slaughter, he loaded. The photo shows the wound after it was
thoroughly cleansed. He requires treatment every day to remove the
proud flesh and it will probably be months before
it is completely
healed. In the meantime, my hubby has fallen in love with this
beautiful boy. Turns out he is a registered APHA out of some
fantastic lines. Not that it matters, I think Buck will be part of
our family for a long time to come. He is NOT up for adoption at
this time. Just another example of a horse that no one wanted to
bother with. He dearly loves John and nickers every time he sees
my husband. During all the
painful treatment he has never ever offered to bite or kick.
Bucks leg has healed nicely, but he still has some
problems walking. We are working with therapy to help the muscles in
his wounded leg. It turns out that Buck had a tremendous infection in
three of his feet, that has been successfully treated. He walks with
more confidence. Buck has always been a sweet, loving boy during all
the painful treatments he has had to endure. He is a special needs
horse and very special to his favorite person, John.
Buck lost his battle against the crippling disease "wobbles" on Jan.
13, 2007. John and I were with him as he passed. Our, consolation,
that he was running free and with out pain. Buck taught us so much
about living your life that is given you, even for such a short time.
He was loving, gentle and forgiving. He knew we were doing all we
could to help him. If tears could have healed him, it wasn't for lack
of them. He was "Johns'" boy and Grampa will miss him terribly. Buck
loved to bury his soft nose in your hair, and big sloppy kisses. We
were blessed to have had the honor to be loved by such a special
being. To know he is flying across the green fields strong, healthy
and beautiful, with Attitudie running beside him, brings some peace to
our hearts.
Wobbler Syndrome is a serious disease that strikes mainly quarter
horses or thoroughbreds and mostly male. It is a disease of the
nervous system and the true cause is unknown. It is attributed to CVM
(cervical vertebral malformation).
There are several web sites or vet books that will give you details on
this serious and heartbreaking disease. I know that the more beautiful
Buck became, the more he filled out and began to mature, the worse it
got. To see this beautiful boy begin to lose his battle was heart
breaking. We hoped he might be one of the lucky few to outgrow it.
Surgery was not an option due to the intensity and rapid development
of the condition. Buck was a rescue. Knowing that we would eventually
lose him, would not have changed our minds. His year with us was full
of love and the joy of having him with us. It was, also, a test of our
courage, to make the decision to let him go, with dignity and love. We
didn't fail him. This is our last picture of Buck, with his favorite
person-John.

Warrior
....
We lost Warrior to sand colic.
Evidently, he had been eating sand long before we ever rescued him
and, no matter what we did, the damage was already done. Just another
sad case of neglect.

Rowdy....
My
special boy Rowdy. He seems to have been born under a dark star. First
his foot injury that caused him to come to us. It was determined by
the vet that light riding would be appropriate. However, I made a
terrible mistake in trusting this beautiful animal to an evil, lying
man who took my boy and badly abused him. He promised that his small
boys would ride him and then took him into the feedlots. I can't
express my unbelievable anger and disbelief at such blatant lies. I
took my Rowdy back thinner, sadder and in pain. The Vet said his
injury was worsened by the hard treatment, but he could still use
light exercise.
Eventually, the bones will fuse in his fetlock and he will not be able
to bend it. I apologize to Rowdy every day that I made that horrible
mistake in judgment. He is a beautiful animal that is beginning to be
the same Rowdy he was when he left. He needs a home where he can run
free until the pain becomes too much for him. Rowdy is receiving daily
care for his injuries and will not be available for adoption, but we
welcome any person or family who would be willing to foster Rowdy and
help with the costs of his care.

Martha's Ticket....
Martha's
Ticket is a new rescue to Break Heart. She is a 29 year old
Thoroughbred mare that was starving in Omaha. We affectionately call
her Maria. Her owner didn't understand or care about the needs of a
geriatric horse. Two wonderful women brought her to Break Heart. Maria
is a great-granddaughter of the great "Citation". After an injury put
an end to her racing career, she was used as a brood mare for many
years. How she ended up in such deplorable condition is a story only
she knows. She is a sweet gentle grand old lady. Instead of living her
life out on green pastures, she has been forced into a struggle to
survive. She is a gentle horse with a lot to give and good years ahead
of her, if we can give her the care she needs. Maria has few teeth, so
she needs regular dental work and special feed. She is hundreds of
pounds down in weight, but is a tough old girl. Maria is a special
needs horse and will be under Break Heart's supervision for the rest
of her life.
Martha's Ticket (Maria) has a dark secret. She loves to roll in
the mud! These pictures were taken just after she was all
cleaned up and I ran in to
get
the camera. However, even through the mud, you can see how much
weight she has put on. Still more to go, but the tough old lady
can still act like a silly girl at times. Maria is wearing a new
red blanket, but wasn't sure she could take time out of her busy day
for photos!

Skeeter ....
Skeeter was with us such a short time, but he stole our hearts.
We will miss his silly flirting with the big mares and his love for
treats. Skeeter passed away with us beside him. This tiny guy
will always be with us.

~ Memories of Lutjic ~

I bought you for
another, but you were always mine. From the first minute I laid eyes
on you, you loved me back. Always wanting to sit in my lap, even after
you had grown so big.
The best $100.00 I ever spent.
Going fishing in Washington over the 4th of July. You were still a pup
and you went on many adventures with your buddy Tanner.
Watching silently as Pampa went about his chores, always being there,
just in case you were needed.
Playing with Cowboy. How you loved that little pup. You were heart
broken when he was killed. You never got over the loss. Now you will
be with him on the Rainbow Bridge. He won't be deaf any longer and
you won't be sick.
Blooming into a country dog, when we moved to Nebraska. Loved chasing
after pheasant and rabbits. So many memories.
Running after the horses, as we rode down the road. Hiding in the
grass and springing out just as we rode by. So much fun for you,
scared the hell out of us!
Playing with Dylan. Dylan rode you for his bucking bull and you loved
every minute of it, even if he pulled on your ears.
Knowing, with no hesitation, you would give your life for mine.
Riding in the big black Dodge was a treasure for you. Leaning back,
you would put your nose on the seat and go to sleep for hours. Just as
long as you were with us. My heart breaking as we had to lift you for
that last ride. You could not get in by yourself.
Shy Girl tried so hard to bring you back and she will miss you
greatly, as will Gypsy.
I cried the night you passed away. Loving as always, you found the
strength to comfort me and laid that great head on my chest. What
effort that must have taken!
A part of the Break Heart, always and forever, my beloved Lut.

Pawnee Dancer ....
This
baby was born on a cold frosty morning - his legs were so long and he
had trouble getting up. He was the foal of Lakota Moon, a wonderful
Mustang rescue sired by Dancer, our paint stallion. We had this
beautiful child for six months before we lost him to colic. I want
all people to be aware that colic is the number one killer of horses.
We still miss him.

Cowboy
Our precious rescue - his life cut short

I took the last puppy nobody wanted at the auction. There were so many
puppies there, it just make you sick that people will not spay or
neuter their animals. I needed another dog like a hole in the head,
but something told me I needed to take this one home. He is part
Catahoula and part red heeler. His name was "Cowboy" and was
completely deaf, but extremely intelligent, taking cues from John and
me.
He was developing into a wonderful companion - his deafness not a
hindrance to an obviously happy life -- but his precious little life
was cut short in our own drive-way by an inattentive driver. We mourn
him still.

Starbuck

Starbuck was a very gentle Thoroughbred gelding
that came to us early in 2006. It was thought he needed a
special diet to regain the weight he had lost. Starbuck had a
tragic secret, he had Cancer and there was nothing to indicate that
until he passed away.
He will be remembered for his sense of humor, as
he was always teasing me to get my attention. He showed me his
strong, indomitable heart when he made it clear it was his wish to
say goodbye to his paddock mates before his passing. I was
humbled.

Specks Sonita Pine

Specks Sonita Pine was a beautiful young filly that never
really had a chance at life. She was malnourished and stunted as a
yearling, a good man bought her and brought her back to health, he sold her
to a bad man, who abused her. The abuse of a severe bit tore up the
inside of her mouth! However, Sonita loved children. She had found her
forever home, where she passed away, from unknown causes. Sonita will
be missed and left many broken hearts behind her.

|
Shiloh

Shiloh had an accident and lost and eye when she
was younger. Her owner abandoned her and she needed a new home.
Shiloh was a sweet loving mare and she never let her blindness stop
her from doing anything. She went to live in Blue Hill, NE in a
wonderful new home, where she was greatly loved. She is greatly
missed, as well.

There is no sense to what happens, no reason to be found.
Abused animals come into your heart and your life.
They may have injuries, are unwanted, or starved
You love them, and do all that you can for their care.
Just when you believe they have a chance,
Just when you know they will have a wonderful life,
They pass on, over the Rainbow Bridge.
No warning, no preparation on your part for their leaving.
One day they are there, the next they are gone!
Beautiful beings with no sign of the Dark Star
That invisible mark them dooms them to an early demise
or a life of cruelty, pain or slaughter.
Fighting the Dark Star can bring you untold heartache
the only reward: Sometimes you win!
Valerie (Mitchell, Ream) Hinderlider

This is me with my Dad. My smile tells it all, I was hooked on horses
and have never got over the love of them.
 |
Dedicated to
Katalina, who tried so hard to live, but her starvation at an early age
claimed her. She was happy here with the other yearlings when she
passed away.
Starbuck, we never knew you were so fillled with cancer, only your big
heart kept you with us for the short time we were honored to have you.
Rowdy, you were doomed at birth and we fought it hard, didn't we love.
This time the Dark Star won.
Specks Sonita Pine, beautiful girl, you had a wonderful home, but it was
not meant to be. A home that was greatly saddened at your tragic
loss. Go Girl, run across those green meadows chasing the wayward
cattle!
Dylans' Grand Attitude, "Attitudie", my love and my light. You
were so perfect, and so needed on the Rainbow Bridge, so the horse
angels came and took you away on Christmas Day. A freak accident,
that has shattered my heart. Your love and light was too blinding
for mere mortals of this earth. Blessed to have been your Mam ma!
Buck, what is there to say? Our only consolation is to know you
are running free, healthy and strong on the Rainbow Bridge. Pampa
will miss you. I know Katalina was waiting for you and you are now
running through tall flowers and green grasses. They say the
truest act of love is to let something go, they never said it would be
so painful.
